RECEPTION

Specimens are received in a fixative (10% formalin) along with the requisition rom the clinician. The following particulars are to be checked while receiving the men: Name, hospital no. of the patient, ward no./OPD, service and the unit which be mentioned in the request form and on the label attached to specimen container. Specimen should be fully immersed in the fixative and should be closed with a tight lid .The form should contain the date of collection of the specimen, name, age, sex. hospital number of the patient, unit, ward/OPD, the clinical details of the patient and the signature of the doctor and the name of the unit in charge.

Fixative routinely used - 10% buffered formalin .

Preparation of 10% formalin
(10ml of commercially available 40% formaldehyde and 90ml of distilled water) The amount of fixative should be 15-20 times the bulk of the tissue to be fixed.

Aim of Fixation

To avoid autolysis and retain structure and morphology of the tissue for further staining .

Labeling of the Specimen

1)   Smaller specimens in penicillin-bottles are separated.
2)      Specimens are-arranged-in-alphabetical order
3)       While arranging, precautions must be taken to see that specimens from same site and specimens with similar diagnoses are not arranged consecutively.
4)       Numbers are given serially in the form and the specimen along with the year. The numbers starts from 1 from 1st  January every year.
5)       Big specimens are given numbers.
6)       A Register containing name, age. sex. hospital number, the unit, slide status. instructions. nature of the specimen and biopsy number. biopsy report, specimen status is maintained.
7)      Specimen and form should be numbered legibly and clearly,
8)      Specimen should not be labeled with ink pen. Glass marking pencil is used.
