GROSSING
Precautions while small grossing
1. The
small specimens are grossed.
2. The site of specimen, colour, size and amount of
specimen are mentioned at the back of the form.
3. Some
specimens are bisected and loaded partially P/E. ( Bullous skin lesions not be
bisected) ….. For Bisecting incision a razor blade or microtome blade is used .
4. If whole
specimen is loaded it is called A/E.
5. P/E specimen
which remains must be stored carefully, and if required embedded , later as Rest
embed R/E.
6. Specimen
is loaded in
the capsule mentioned for processing.
7. Tiny specimens and
curettings are kept on a small piece of filter paper immersed in water, and
folded along with label containing the corresponding number of specimen.
Wattman No. 1 filter paper is used for this purpose.
8. 4-5 Filter papers can be
kept in a capsule and closed carefully.
9. After loading, the
capsules should not be dried and kept in formalin, until processing is started.
10. The tip of the forceps should be wased thoroughly
after loading each specimen to avoid
even a tiny bit of the previous specimen carried over to the next .
11. All skin liner , bone marrow , liver biopsies are sent
for special processing .
Precautions while big Grossing
1. The specimens
are cut and kept in fresh formalin for 24 hours for the inner structure of the
specimen to be fixed.
2. The next day the description of the specimen is
mentioned and bits are given from various areas.
3. The bits
are given alphabets and are loaded in the capsule along with the label containing
the corresponding number and alphabet.
4. If more
than one bit is loaded in the capsule, separator is used to avoid mix up.
5. Bits of
similar specimens should never be loaded in the same capsule
6. The
thickness of the tissue should not be more than 3-4 mm
7. The
capsules should be kept in formalin immediately after loading.
8. The rest of the specimen is stored in formalin
carefully, until it is required.
